Opening Doors Course Schedule

Open the door to adaptive technology for your students! Learn how to use the important tools they will need to succeed in today's technology-based world.

Throughout the 2011-12 academic year, the Guild for the Blind is offering six different adaptive technology training seminars with accompanying CPDUs.

The fee for each three-hour hands-on training course is $25. Registration is free for Illinois AER members with your identification number!

Course Schedule

Seminar #1: Devour the World Wide Web with JAWS
Thursday, September 29, 1:00 to 4:00 pm
Thursday, January 26, 1:00 to 4:00 pm

Understanding how to use JAWS with the World Wide Web as an Internet resource can open the flood gates of information for your students. Course covers web page navigation, JAWS Internet hotkeys, search strategies and useful web resources.

Seminar #2: All You Need is a Victor Reader Stream
Thursday, October 27, 1:00 to 4:00 pm
Thursday, February 23, 1:00 to 4:00 pm

The Stream packs a whole lot into one device – books, notes, and audio recordings and is one of the most important tools for your student with vision loss. Learn the basic Stream operation, how to record lectures and notes, use the go to and bookmark functions and the ins and outs of obtaining books from NLS and Learning Ally.

Seminar #3: Opening the Apple World
Thursday, December 1, 1:00 to 4:00 pm

Your students will feel like one of the crowd when they use their own Apple device just like their friends. Apple products offer full accessibility for your student. In this course you will learn voiceover keyboard commands, magnification features, gestures for the iPhone and iPad and useful apps for students.

Seminar #4: Take a Picture and Listen to it Speak!
Thursday, March 29, 1:00 to 4:00 pm

The new digital imaging systems make scanning textbooks a thing of the past. These camera systems are computer and non-computer based, have magnification capabilities and multiple uses for your student. Learn how the different systems can fill a variety of needs, see the products in action and obtain pricing information.

Seminar #5: Maximizing the Zoom Text Experience
Thursday, April 26, 1:00 to 4:00 pm

Customizing Zoom Text features like color, background and contrast can make a world of difference for your student. Understanding the intricacies of the program can save time and money for your school, too. Learn about shortcut Zoom Text keyboard commands, customizing the program for individual students and using configuration files to save student settings.

Seminar #6: Moving Forward with JAWS
Thursday, May 24, 1:00 to 4:00 pm

Moving past the basics, this JAWS seminar shows you the intermediate and advanced functions JAWS has to offer. You will explore how the JAWS Configuration Manager enables other programs to run more efficiently and to customize many other settings. Learn how to investigate the entire computer screen with the JAWS cursor, use the Start-up Wizard to change settings and work with the pronunciation dictionary.
