Diabetic Retinopathy Support Group

The Guild's Diabetic Retinopathy support group meets the third Thursday afternoon of the month from 1:30 to 3:00 pm.

Topics for upcoming groups are:

  • Positive & Negative Coping Strategies (February 16) How are your friends and family handling your vision loss? Does their support help or hinder your self confidence? Here, we examine differences between positive and negative support and how to effectively cope in difficult situations.

  • Diabetes and the Pharmacy (March 15) It's difficult not to hear commercials for the latest cold remedy, pain pill or sleep aid. But how safe are these products for someone with diabetes? The Guild will bring in a pharmacist to help you fully understand how over the counter remedies can impact your diet and medications.

  • How Diabetes Impacts Your Social Life (April 19) Whether its safety concerns, or simply feeling awkward, vision loss can often deter people from wanting to get out in public. This session offers tips for developing the courage to get out and improve your social skills.

  • Show and Tell: Products That Make Life Easier (May 17) The Guild's Product Center Manager, Brian Hollandsworth, who also has diabetic retinopathy, will share his story and will demonstrate the latest products that make life with limited vision so much easier!

  • Focus Pocus (June 21) This session investigates the latest medical research and treatments. How do we determine which information is truly valid and which just gives us false hope?

  • Diabetic Educators (July 19) What is a diabetic educator and why should you make this person a vital part of your management team? Guest TBA.

Note: Due to scheduling conflicts or brilliant ideas, session topics are subject to change!
