Martha Cowden

I was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1942 and began serious art study upon graduation from high school. I have credits from a large variety of colleges and schools.

My work combines hand built pottery with fiber coiling, a Native American basketry technique. I believe texture and shape are important parts of my work to help me achieve a variety of effects.

Since I went blind at the age of 32, all my work is tactual. I rely totally on my sense of touch to create my one-of-a-kind pieces. I really enjoy the entire process used to create my hand-built pottery pieces. Clay, natural fibers, and handspun yarns are used in various combinations to achieve different effects. Texture is a very important part of my work, and manipulating the clay is very satisfying.
