Passionate Focus 2010 Artists
Nora Devane
I have always loved photography. Whether it was capturing family moments or something capturing my fancy, I clicked away. After my children were grown, I developed a more serious interest in learning photography. I had family members, who were professionals, to tutor me. I bought many books to teach myself the ins and outs of manual 35mm cameras.
Eleven years ago I went to see my eye doctor for "issues." I was diagnosed with RP (Retinitis Pigmentosa) and my life changed. I no longer took my vision for granted. I wanted to capture as much of the beauty around me before I could no longer "see" it. I switched to digital photography. It allows me greater freedom. I can take as many pictures as I want. Also, it allows me to 'tweak' and play with my photos as I wish.
Some days my CME (cystoid macular edema) causes vision to be very blurry. On 'cellophane days', as I call them, I take my camera outdoors to capture the small details in nature; a flower, a sunset, or an insect may catch my eye. I review the photos on my computer, and see the details where my vision in the field has failed m. I don't always know what I've captured. My photography is my therapy to deal with my RP.
My husband and I go for walks. If he sees something I might enjoy, he directs my focus using points of a clock for me to find the subject. We are a great team!
Thanks to my camera and computer, I know I can continue doing the one thing I truly love to do. My photography.
