Programs and Services - New Visions - Next Steps

The Next Steps workshops are available free-of-charge throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. We encourage you to attend all that are of interest to you. Seminars are approximately two hours long.

1. Support for Low Vision – Support groups are a source for sharing information, resources, and making new friends.

Get practical advice on starting and maintaining a vision support group

Learn more about support groups if you are considering joining one

Discuss basic guidelines on the practical aspects of running a support group

2. Computers Can Talk! – Adaptive technology can help you stay independent and improve your quality of life. This seminar is held at the Guild or at community locations that house a computer lab.

Learn about computer software programs that let you hear and/or magnify what you see on the computer monitor

Learn about other devices that are available to help you read and/or magnify print materials

3. Moving On! – How can a person with a visual impairment move about safely and independently both indoors and out? This seminar, which introduces participants to orientation and mobility, will answer your questions:

Do I need a white cane?

How can I stop bumping into my furniture and walls?

Can I cross streets by myself if I can’t see the cars?

4. In Touch With Braille – Come satisfy your curiosity about Braille and learn how easily it can improve your independence.

What is Braille? How is it read? How is it written?

Could Braille be useful to you?

When do you switch from large print to Braille?
