The American Council of the Blind presents approximately thirty scholarships and awards to outstanding blind students. All legally blind persons admitted to academic and vocational training programs at the post-secondary level are encouraged to apply for one of these scholarships. A cumulative grade point average of 3.3 is generally required, but extenuating circumstances may be considered for certain scholarships. Applications may be completed on line, but supporting documentation must be submitted in hard copy print. Scholarships are presented at the organization's national convention in July. Scholarship winners are expected to be present at the convention if they have reached their 18th birthday. Generally, ACB will cover all reasonable costs connected with convention attendance. ACB also administers scholarship programs for its affiliates in Colorado, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Oregon. Potential candidates will be considered for other scholarships not yet verified, if available. Applications and additional information can be obtained by calling the national office or visiting the ACB's website.

The Association of Blind Citizens (ABC) offers college scholarships to blind or visually impaired individuals seeking a college degree. Applicants must be legally blind, be legal U.S. residents, and provide proof of acceptance to an accredited institution of higher learning or recognized vocational program. The scholarship ay be applied to tuition, living expenses, or related expenses resulting from vision impairment. For more information and an application visit their website.

Blind Service Association (BSA) has scholarships available. Students who are blind or visually impaired, planning to attend either college or professional school, and live in the six county metropolitan Chicago area are eligible. The awards will be as high as $3,000.00. Call for more information or to request an application.

The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) Scholarship Program presents approximately thirty college, vocational school, and graduate students with assistance to fulfill their academic and professional goals. Awards range in value from $3,000 to $12,000 and include a trip to the NFB convention. Previous scholarship winners and full-time employees interested in pursuing postsecondary degrees should also consider applying. The application deadline is March 31 each year. Applications can be obtained from the website or by calling the NFB national office. In addition many of the organization's state affiliates have scholarship programs for students in their area.

These awards, ranging from $1,000 to $6,000 are presented annually to a total of nine students. Applicants must meet the following criteria: be legally blind; be registered, individually or through a school, with RFB&D®; have received, or will receive, a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States or its territories; ave an overall academic average for their undergraduate years of 3.0 or more on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent, if an alternative grading system is used); and provide evidence of leadership, enterprise and service to others. The Lighthouse offers The Mary Kathryn and Michael Panitch Scholarship Program in 2004. Five or more scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded to individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Students applying for these scholarships must have been accepted to or be attending an accredited college or university (undergraduate or graduate level program) or pursuing vocational education and training options. A separate scholarship, the President's Scholarship, is available to employees of The Chicago Lighthouse who are visually impaired desiring to enhance and upgrade their skills or students of The Lighthouse who need assistance to be enrolled or continue their enrollment at The ighthouse.
