Adaptive Technology Services
The Guild’s Robert Stone Center for Adaptive Technology offers adaptive technology instruction in a small group setting or one-on-one. Topics include:
- Screen reading and screen magnification
- Navigating Windows® with adaptive technology
- Microsoft Office® programs
- Email and the Internet
- Scan-to-speech programs, cell phone options, notetaking devices, and using Peapod
Career Services
The Guild’s Employment Connection program assists those seeking professional careers learn the practical and soft skills needed to conduct effective job searches, addressing each individual’s needs, goals, and interests. Services include:
- Individual and group career counseling and coaching
- Assessments to identify work style, interests, skills, and goals
- Identification of industries and jobs of interest
- Workshops on self-advocacy, job search activities, job retention, networking, and presentation skills
- Network opportunities with HR professionals to hone interview skills
- Consultations on disclosing a disability in an interview, requesting reasonable accommodations, and negotiating salaries and benefits
- Monthly job club
Vision Rehabilitation
New Visions is a series of four workshops for seniors to better understand, cope with, and more easily manage daily life activities impacted by vision loss. Workshops provide information and hands-on product demonstrations. Topics covered include:
- Emotional and practical implications of vision loss
- Ways to organize to lower frustration, save time, and increase safety
- Enhancing remaining vision
- How magnifiers, talking products, and large print products simplify life
This program is free to all and is offered throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs in partnership with community organizations.
Daily Living Product Store
The Guild’s Consumer Product Center carries many tools and products to help manage daily living tasks. Products can be purchased in person or ordered via phone or email. Items include:
- Talking watches and calculators
- Large print and tactile labeling accessories
- White canes and cane tips
- Braille paper, slates, and styli
- Large print calendars and address books
Low Vision Lab
In our low vision lab, we offer a wide range of magnification equipment and lighting products to meet individual needs, including:
- Hand-held, stand, and pocket magnifiers
- Illuminated and non-illuminated magnifiers
- Monoculars, telescopes, and binoculars
- Closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs)
- Floor, desk, and clip-on lamps
Information and Referral Services
The Guild provides information pertaining to a wide variety of issues facing those who are blind or visually impaired. Our free monthly newsletter, "Guild Briefs," provides resources for those with vision loss, friends and family that support them and the professionals who serve them. Members are encouraged to call and ask questions, and if we can’t answer your questions, our staff will help find someone who can!
