Bequests

Bequests have been an important source of support for the Guild for the Blind throughout its 55-year history. One bequest established our endowment fund; another set up the Joan P. Hussey Scholarship Fund and provided equipment for the Joan P. Hussey Independent Computer Lab.

These gifts ensure the future of our mission to assist children and adults who are blind or visually impaired live independently.

You should work with your attorney to determine the type of bequest you wish to make. Standard language for a bequest is:

"I devise, will and bequeath to the Guild FOR THE BLIND, an Illinois not-for-profit organization, the sum of $ (or equivalent, i.e., number of shares of XYZ Corporation, percentage of, or residual of my estate) to be used by said corporation for its general purposes."

Guardian Angels

You may become a member of the Guild's Guardian Angels by declaring your intention to remember the Guild with a planned gift. Simply contact Cheryl Megurdichian at cherylm@guildfortheblind.org or 312-236-8569.

Life Income Gifts

Life Income Gifts provide an income stream to you or a loved one and the possibility of income, capital gains, and estate tax savings while providing for the future of the Guild. Learn how you can help individuals who are blind and help yourself through one of these options:

Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust
The donor puts a gift of cash or securities into a trust, and, in return, the donor (and/or other beneficiary) receives a specified yearly amount for life (or a certain term). The final transfer of the gift to the charity occurs at the end of the trust's term, but the income tax benefits are available on the year it is established.

Charitable Remainder Unitrust
In this vehicle, the amount of incomes varies each year. The donor receives a fixed percentage of the market value of the trust.

The information provided is for general educational purposes only. For advice and assistance in specific cases, the Guild recommends that you seek the services of a legal or financial advisor.
